Flaminia Celata (*1973) is a transdisciplinary artist whose practice explores complex themes—often rooted in personal experience—through photography, video, installations, and video performance. Her work intertwines neuroscientific, social, and environmental perspectives, creating projects with a strong visual and emotional impact.
After working for several years as an interior decorator and restorer, Celata began a new artistic path, graduating in 2009 from the Scuola Romana di Fotografia in Rome. This experience shaped a documentary language that defined her early works Karen (2009–2011) and Olivier (2012–2015).
In 2017, with the project IO sono memoria (2017–2021), her research evolved toward an interdisciplinary dimension, engaging with neuroscience and embracing multiple media. Celata has participated in numerous artist residencies across Italy and Europe, exhibiting in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally.
Since 2022, she has integrated the concept of embodyment into her artistic inquiry, deepening her exploration of somatic dance practices such as Skinner Releasing Technique and improvisation through workshops in Europe and the United States.
Since 2020, Celata has collaborated with German artist Bärbel Praun as part of a duo investigating ecological themes related to anthropocene. Between 2020 and 2023, they developed APUA, a project dedicated to the marble quarries of the Apuan Alps, and in 2023, during a residency in Portugal, they created Our soil came to remind you, addressing lithium extraction and local community resistance. The project was presented at the Bienal de Cerveira (2023) and in Porto (2024). Their works have been exhibited in Italy, Portugal, and Germany, and in 2024, the video Landscape Archive (APUA) entered the permanent collection of the Bienal de Cerveira Museum (PT).
In 2024, she was the winner of the Strategia Fotografia call with her research project The boundaries are eminently porous, promoted by the Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea of the Italian Ministry of Culture, supporting the development and promotion of photographic talent abroad. The project, which investigates neuroplasticity and gender, led her to a residency in Folkestone (UK), where she developed a multidisciplinary approach combining archival research (Wellcome Collection, London), laboratory practices, and workshops as spaces for collective experimentation. The final presentation—featuring installation, performance, and talk—was held on October 2025, at the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome, in collaboration with Angelo Azzurro Onlus, Fondazione Santa Lucia, and Università degli Studi di Roma.
Since 2015, Celata has also collaborated with the training company Into the Change, bringing photography and installation art into corporate environments through team-building activities and talent development programs.
